Bella Sky Hotel: new architectural landmark in Copenhagen
Copenhagen’s Bella Sky Hotel by 3XN architects is the largest hotel in Scandinavia.
Its two 76-metre-high towers have more than 800 rooms and 30 conference rooms. In order to offer the best possible view from all of the rooms, both hotel towers are inclined – a little shy, as the architects say – at a formidable 15-degree angle in opposite directions. The two towers are linked by a skywalk, a closed bridge, at a lofty altitude of 70 metres. The diverging towers with geometric patterns on the façade comprising different polygon forms create a new landmark that is visible from afar in the Danish capital. The meticulously pre-fabricated elements consist of glass and coated aluminium.
In some rooms, the construction method not only opens up views reaching far into the distance but also views that drop straight down, creating the impression of floating over the landscape. Bold guests who have a head for heights book one of the corner rooms with slanting walls. Standing at the floor-length window, they can then enjoy fascinating views of the world below. The Sky Bar up on the 23rd floor is particularly impressive and offers views reaching as far as Sweden.
A relaxed and stylish interior design takes the guest straight to the heart of Scandinavian lifestyle and interiors. 3XN architects sought inspiration from the interior design of Scandinavian houses when introducing the “New Nordic Cool” style into the hotel: simplicity, practicality, quality – both in terms of design and all the materials used. This is why the architectural trio from Copenhagen uses predominantly natural materials in the rooms. Carpets are made from wool, floors from smoked oak, furniture from leather and bed linen from cotton satin.
Duravit is present in all rooms of the superior 4-star hotel. The Scola washbasin – a Duravit classic in rectangular form with a deep, circular bowl - highlights the Scandinavian ambience. The Danes also express their interior design style with the minimalist design of Starck 3: Starck 3 wall-mounted toilets add the finishing touch to the 830 en-suite bathrooms. The 3XN architects were quite adamant that, despite the size of the hotel, the guest should nevertheless feel at ease in the Scandinavian interior, a home from home, so to speak. All suites are to be found on the VIP floors, which extend from the 20th to the 23rd storey. Here, Duravit’s Starck X is resplendent in all the bathrooms.
The Hotel Bella Sky is chartering new territory with the “Bella Donna Floor”: a floor to which only women have access. Organic, round forms dominate the furnishing and design of the rooms. The theme is “women design for women”, and furnishings by Arne Jacobsen, Bang & Olufsen, Hay and Vitra add the finishing touch to the interior design. In addition, there are lots of small, comfortable details, such as extra large bath towel holders or high-quality beauty products.
For the architects and hotel management, it is important that the building has a sustainable overall strategy. Certification in accordance with the Green Key programme for hotels, an initiative of the Foundation for Environmental Education in Europe (F.E.E.), forms part of this. One very specific example of how this is put into practice is the 600,000 bees that live on the roofs of the two towers. So far, the small insects have produced 50 kg of honey. This is used by the hotel’s chefs, in cocktails, for the breakfast buffet and also as souvenirs.
The hotel has already become a landmark of the new district of Ørestad, which is currently being developed at the south-eastern edge of Copenhagen. It will offer housing for 20,000 people and 60,000 jobs. The hotel and the Bella Center, one of Europe’s most modern exhibition and convention centres, together link the new district of Ørestad with Copenhagen's old town and the airport.
